Environmental Health & Safety Manager

About You:

You are passionate about keeping employees safe and promoting a healthy workplace. As the Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Manager, you will be responsible for creating, implementing, evaluating, and continuously improving EHS programs across all teams and locations at Thalmic in the areas of: Legislative Compliance and Standards, Emergency & Incident Management, Chemical Management , PPE Programs, Risk Management, EHS Management System, Training & Communication, Healthy Workplace, Laser Safety and Environmental Performance.  You will promote a safety culture and enhance the awareness and engagement of employees for all EHS initiatives.

Main objectives:

  • Within 30 days,
    • Gain a solid understanding of Thalmic’s culture and work environment to ensure that the EHS programs you will develop align with Thalmic's culture, agile environment, and rapidly changing needs of the business
    • Meet with various internal stakeholders to review current state of programs and assess priorities
    • Assess the need, determine the direction of,  and facilitate an action plan for the creation of EHS standards and tools, identifying compliance requirements & associated gaps
  • Within 60 days,
    • Act as a resource to leaders and employees for EHS/Laser Safety inquiries and concerns
    • Liaise with teams across the organization to begin the implementation of action plans and ensure EHS is integrated into their operations
    • Become an active participant on the Laser Safety and Joint Health & Safety Committees
  • Ongoing
    • Oversee Emergency Preparedness & Response Program including emergency drills & exercises, emergency response plans & employee procedures, incident management & post incident reviews
    • Administer the Chemical Management Program including proper maintenance of MSDs, and chemical approval processes
    • Coordinate Hygiene Assessments & Medical Surveillance Programs
    • Ensure all equipment pre-starts are completed and employees are aware of all required safety measures, including proper PPE
    • Conduct ergonomic assessments as required
    • Assist with workers compensation claims management- early and safe return to work, suitability assessments for medical restrictions, compatibility assessments
    • Assist with laser safety analysis and conduct risk assessments, program enforcement and investigations and play a key role in communication of protocols and ensuring that these are incorporated throughout the organization
    • Manage hazard identification, risk assessment & risk mitigation action plan execution
    • Conduct incident investigations, root cause analysis & corrective action follow-up
    • Coordinate awareness and prevention programs / training for EHS and Laser safety including training needs assessments, customized content development, delivery & tracking
    • Support Manufacturing & Design Engineering teams with laser safety and Health and Safety expertise by:
      • Participating in all relevant design engineering review meetings
      • Participating in all Pre-Start reviews relevant to equipment and other Health and Safety on-boarding tasks
    • Identify EHS practices, tools and processes that provide efficient and effective data collection to support the organization in moving from compliance to best practice; defining key performance indicators to measure effectiveness
    • Monitor EHS performance and risks and act as a resource to the business in mitigating risk, reducing costs and incidents/injuries
    • Seek opportunities for continuous improvement & innovation in EHS; offer creative, socially responsible, and environmentally sustainable solutions that integrate EHS throughout all areas of the business
    • Continually review all existing and new legislation in regions in which Thalmic operates and develop/implement strategies to ensure compliance
    • Liaise with external organizations including all EHS regulatory bodies, resources and services

What You’ll Need:

  • Bachelor degree in related discipline plus CRSP, CIH, CCPE, or CCOHN designation preferred
  • 8+ years Health & Safety experience in areas highlighted
  • Familiarity and working knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act and all Regulations (especially Reg 851 for Industrial Establishments, Reg 833, Reg 851 PHSR’s)
  • Familiarity with common laser safety standards (ANSI z136.1),  Electrical Codes, Building Codes, Fire Codes and construction regulations
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships with various stakeholders
  • Excellent computer, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Experience in supporting multiple sites, including manufacturing environments
  • Previous experience supporting a high-growth business preferred

  • Professional experience as Laser Safety Officer (LSO)
